Victims of Their Bodies: Capitalism and Exploitation of Women’s Labor on Floricultural Farms in Uganda

ABSTRACT Globally, flower farms predominantly employ women. Yet, gender stereotypes rather than individual abilities influence the high number and tasks assigned to women, making them victims of their bodies. This article is based on a qualitative study of gender and employment dynamics at the JP Cuttings Ltd. (JPCL) floricultural farm in Uganda, based on 15 in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with representatives of management and employees. The findings show that sociocultural construction of gender stereotypes that women’s bodies are flexible, delicate, and best suited for detailed tasks influence employment patterns and affect working conditions. Findings further showed that most women are employed in harvesting and packaging because of stereotypes that they have flexible, “feminine” hands. Most men are employed in the construction and maintenance of shades. However, “feminine tasks” come with adverse health effects and meager remuneration compared to men. The conclusion is that while women contribute to the socioeconomic development of society, the value of their work is not adequately acknowledged. There is a need to revise employment practices, revalue women’s work, and close the remuneration gap between men and women working on floricultural farms to promote gender equality and sustainable development.
