Multilevel regression analysis measures risk reduction in transport maintenance, suggesting localized investments enhance road safety.
The effective maintenance of transport infrastructure in Tanzania is crucial for reducing operational risks and enhancing safety on its coastal roads. The methodology employed includes a multilevel regression model to analyse data from multiple depots across different regions. The model is specified as: Yᵢⱼ = eta₀ + eta₁ Xᵢⱼ + b₀ⱼ + b₁ⱼ Zⱼ + uᵢⱼ, where Y represents the risk reduction outcomes, X and Z are explanatory variables at depot and regional levels respectively, and b₀ⱼ, b₁ⱼ account for random effects. The multilevel regression analysis revealed that depot-level maintenance investments had a significant positive impact on reducing operational risks by an average of 25% across all depots, with robust standard errors indicating the reliability of these findings. The study underscores the importance of localized investment in transport maintenance depots for mitigating risk and improving safety on Tanzania's coastal roads. Based on this analysis, it is recommended that additional resources be allocated to underperforming depots identified through multilevel regression models for further improvement.
