Synthetic Worldview Reconstruction reconstructs latent belief systems using data analysis, indicating new methods in social science.
Abstract (English) This work introduces Synthetic Worldview Reconstruction (SWR), a new social science method for reconstructing latent belief systems from publicly available data. SWR formalizes this reconstruction task as an inverse problem: given observable manifestations of an actor—public statements and documented actions—the goal is to identify the underlying belief system (worldview) that most coherently generates these manifestations. A Large Language Model (LLM) serves as the inversion operator, constructing a fictional synthetic person whose worldview provides the best explanatory fit for the totality of the input data. The method operationalizes this core idea through a standardized prompt protocol (synthesis, interview, reflection, distillate), systematic data grouping into synthesis units along six independent variables, six complementary operationalizations, and a multi-layered validation framework. Its theoretical anchoring connects four traditions: Weber's ideal type, Booth's implied author, Inverse Reinforcement Learning, and projective test procedures. SWR combines qualitative depth with quantitative scalability, enabling—for the first time—systematic reconstruction and comparison of latent worldviews across large numbers of actors.
