This qualitative study examines legal safeguards for LGBTQ+ rights in universities, indicating a need for uniform legislation.
This study examines legal safeguards for LGBTQ+ rights in Zimbabwean universities and colleges, focusing on a period from to . The study employed a qualitative approach by conducting interviews with stakeholders such as university administrators, LGBTQ+ student groups, and legal experts. Data was collected through semi-structured questionnaires and focus group discussions to gather comprehensive insights into the current legal landscape. A notable finding is that while there are no specific laws explicitly protecting LGBTQ+ rights in universities and colleges, several informal policies exist which vary significantly between institutions. The review highlights a need for uniform legislation and consistent enforcement of existing guidelines to ensure equitable treatment of all students regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Recommendations include the introduction of comprehensive anti-discrimination laws that specifically address LGBTQ+ rights, along with mandatory training programmes for educators on inclusive practices.
