“Les damnés de la mer.” Représentations de l’é/immigration clandestine sur les deux rives de la Méditerranée

ABSTRACT: Once considered a space for economic opportunities following the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the Mediterranean Sea has become increasingly conceptualized as a border that the European community has sought to strengthen at the same time as it abolished its internal borders. This article offers an analysis of the representations of clandestine migration on both shores of the Mediterranean. Beyond the official political position on illegal immigration and clandestine emigration in Maghreb countries, I analyze the production of an “aesthetics of subversion,” an alternative imaginary of the border, in the representation of the harraga in pre-Arab Spring Maghreb literature. Abstract: Considérée comme un espace d’opportunités économiques après la chute du mur de Berlin, la mer Méditerranée est conceptualisée aujourd’hui comme une frontière que la communauté européenne a cherché à renforcer tout en abolissant ses frontières internes. Cet article propose une analyse des représentations des migrations clandestines sur les deux rives de la Méditerranée. Au-delà des positions politiques officielles des pays du Maghreb sur l’immigration illégale et l’émigration clandestine, j’analyse la production d’une “esthétique de la subversion” dans la représentation de la harga et des harragas dans la littérature algérienne et marocaine antérieure au Printemps arabe.
