Evaluation of safety and efficacy of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for calves, indicating its safety status.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) evaluated the safety and efficacy of Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I‑1079 as a zootechnical feed additive for calves, other ruminants, and camelids. The organism holds Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) status, and therefore no additional studies were required for consumer, animal, or environmental safety. Toxicology studies indicated no skin or eye irritation and no skin sensitisation, though the non‑encapsulated form may act as a respiratory sensitiser. Three efficacy trials in calves demonstrated improved feed conversion ratios at a minimum inclusion level of 1×10⁹ CFU/kg of complete feed. Analytical methods provided by the applicant were validated by the EU Reference Laboratory and judged suitable for official controls
