Enterococcus Faecium-Associated Empyema in a Young Patient with Multiple Comorbidities: A Case Report

Export Enterococcus faecium is a rare cause of empyema. We report the case of a 30-year-old man with multiple co-morbid conditions who presented with a 2-week history of cough, fever, and dyspnea for 1 day. Chest imaging revealed a right pleural effusion, and the patient underwent pleural pigtail catheter insertion. Blood culture and pleural fluid culture revealed E. faecium, which is susceptible to vancomycin. The patient was treated with a 4-week course of intravenous vancomycin, and repeat imaging showed improvement in the empyema.
