Key Result

People with late effects of polio experience both activity limitations and participation restrictions, which are only weakly associated, requiring separate rehabilitation focus.

Key Points

  • To examine the relationship between activity limitations and participation restrictions in individuals with late effects of polio (LEoP).
  • Analyzed perceptions of activity limitations and participation restrictions in individuals with LEoP.
  • Identified the degree of association between these two concepts.
  • Proposed intervention strategies based on findings.
  • Participants reported distinct perceptions of activity limitations and participation restrictions.
  • Only a weak association was found between activity limitations and participation restrictions.
  • Recommendations for rehabilitation highlight the need to address both factors in therapy.

In people with late effects of polio, activity limitations and participation restrictions are only weakly associated, indicating both should be specifically addressed in rehabilitation.

Abstract

The results show that people with LEoP perceive activity limitations as well as participation restrictions and that these concepts are only weakly associated. Therefore, during rehabilitation both activity limitations and participation restrictions need to be addressed in people with LEoP. This new knowledge may assist rehabilitation professionals when developing and implementing targeted interventions for people with LEoP.
