This review summarizes liver damage mechanisms in erythropoietic protoporphyria, highlighting risk factors and treatment options.
Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is a rare inherited disorder of heme biosynthesis characterized by lifelong photosensitivity and accumulation of protoporphyrin IX. Although most patients present primarily with cutaneous manifestations, hepatic involvement represents the most serious systemic complication. This concise review summarizes current knowledge on the mechanisms underlying liver damage in EPP, risk factors for progression, diagnostic considerations, and available therapeutic options. We also discuss monitoring strategies and emerging treatments that may help improve outcomes in individuals at risk of hepatobiliary complications.
