Analysis reveals thermal subsidence mechanisms forming sedimentary basins in West Siberia, indicating geological evolution.
A mechanism for the formation of intraplate sedimentary basins has been discussed. The models available have been revised and analyzed. The authors consider five models of thermal subsidence to explain the two-stage formation of the West-Siberian sedimentary basin. The first stage (230 to 130 MA ago) is described in terms of simple thermal subsidence after the Early Mesozoic mantle activation. The second stage (130 to 90 Ma ago) is characterized by a sharply increased rate of subsidence. It is explained by a mechanism of phase transformations triggered under certain physical conditions of the cooling lithosphere.
