Key Points

  • Manual therapy and exercise together do not substantially relieve pain intensity compared to exercise alone.
  • Significant improvements in functional disability were observed in both short- and long-term outcomes.
  • Systematic review and meta-analysis were employed to evaluate the effects of interventions on pain and disability.
  • Findings imply a need for tailored interventions considering the limited impact on pain relief.

Abstract

Manual therapy combined with therapeutic exercise does not appear to provide substantial additional short-term improvements in pain intensity when compared to exercise alone. However, significant benefits were identified for functional disability in both short- and long-term outcomes PROSPERO REGISTRATION: CRD42023413778.
