This case report highlights that early recognition and complete surgical excision with wide margins are essential for managing radiation-induced angiosarcoma of the breast.
INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced angiosarcoma of the breast is a rare but aggressive secondary malignancy that develops several years after breast surgery and adjuvant radiation therapy. Because of its poor prognosis and diagnostic challenges, early recognition and complete surgical excision are essential for optimal management.
Hayashi et al. (2026) conducted a case report in 72-year-old woman with radiation-induced angiosarcoma of the breast developing 7 years after breast-conserving surgery and adjuvant radiation therapy for adenoid cystic carcinoma (n=1). Total mastectomy with wide skin excision and split-thickness skin grafting was evaluated on Recurrence-free survival at 6 months after complete surgical resection. Total mastectomy with wide skin excision completely relieved breast pain and resulted in recurrence-free status at 6 months in a 72-year-old woman with radiation-induced breast angiosarcoma.
