Cytogenetic study reveals varied chromosome numbers in tropical Vacciniodeae species, suggesting implications for evolution.
Nine tropical species of the Vacciniodeae were examined to determine their chromosome numbers. Four species of Vaccinium had a haploid number of n=12 and one species had a haploid number of n=36. For one species no number was found. Two species of Dimorphanthera were examined and the haploid number was n=24 for both species. One Gaultheria species had a haploid number of eleven. Speciation and the distribution of polyploids in the genus are discussed, as is the phyletic origin of the Ericales.
