Overview investigates web services standards and presents an online shopping cart solution for e-commerce systems.
Web Services is a new distributed scheme that enables program access to software components. Hamessing the power of ubiquitous protocols and standards such as HTTP and XML, it offers a means to expose business functionality that can be consumed by applications of any kind in any programming language and on any platform. The Web Services paradigm will affect the way we develop business applications and thus ways to conduct business transactions. This thesis provides an overview of Web Services and investigates the set of de facto standards used by different layers of the Web Services Stack — SOAP, WSDL and UDDI. An online shopping cart example is implemented which proposes an architectural solution for building highly flexible, reusable and integratable e-commerce applications in the realm of Web Services.
