Macrofloral analysis identifies flora and maize use in precontact Native groups, suggesting agricultural practices.
The Safety Harbor site (8PI2) is the type site for the phase and material culture complex of the precontact Mississippian period in the Tampa Bay region of Florida. This site is recognized as the probable location of the Tocobaga chiefdom according to Spanish accounts dating to the late sixteenth century. Three soil samples were submitted to PaleoResearch Institute to investigate the paleoenvironment and flora utilized by Native groups that inhabited the area, as well as identify the presence of maize cultivation or consumption at the site.
