Explores a new cross-disciplinary curriculum in higher education, highlighting increased employability.
Abstract The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks a transformative shift in Indian higher education by dismantling rigid disciplinary silos and promoting a multidisciplinary approach. This study explores the innovative integration of a Physics open elective and mathematics minor with an Economics major, a pairing that leverages the synergies found in "Econophysics"—the application of statistical mechanics and non-linear dynamics to economic systems. The primary focus of this research is exploring the prospects of the understanding of Econophysics regarding this specific cross-disciplinary track. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, the study investigates whether students perceive this combination as a value-addition to their quantitative and analytical skill sets. Furthermore, it examines the attitudes of faculty and administrators toward the structural feasibility of such a curriculum. Preliminary insights suggest that while there is high interest due to increased employability in quantitative finance and data science, concerns regarding credit-mapping and inter-departmental coordination persist. This study explores a crucial understanding for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to design curricula that bridge the gap among Economics, Physics Mathematics and Statistics aligning with global academic standards.
