Nonhealing corneal ulcers in horses: Clinical clarification and management considerations

Summary A comprehensive ophthalmic examination is essential for identifying factors that may contribute to the development of a corneal ulcer. The report by Dixon et al. ( Equine Veterinary Education , 2025) in the current issue features a case series where a conjunctival foreign body was identified as the cause of corneal ulceration. The specific clinical presentation of a primary, superficial, nonhealing corneal ulcer with nonadherent epithelium is also discussed, along with management options. This commentary highlights the importance of distinguishing between nonhealing corneal ulcers caused by underlying factors and those that are primary.
