Finite element modeling reveals key insights into lateral response in partially infilled frames, suggesting improved predictive methods.
The study examines the lateral response of partially infilled frames through finite element modeling with the primary objective to develop a simplified strut model that can satisfactorily predict initial lateral stiffness, peak strength, and various failure modes associated with partially infilled frames. Two configurations of partially infilled frames (PIFs) were considered: ventilation‐type walls with an opening area of 26.7% and a corridor‐type wall with an opening area of 46.7%. To further explore the lateral response of PIFs, a parametric study was conducted to assess the impact of bed‐joint shear strength on the load‐carrying capacity of the infill.
