Key Points

  • To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on weight loss and quality of life one year after metabolic bariatric surgery.
  • Analyzed follow-up visit frequency during COVID-19 waves in Germany
  • Compared quality of life indicators pre- and post-surgery
  • Assessed short-term outcomes related to MBS
  • Quality of life showed a slight reduction among participants
  • Weight loss outcomes remained comparable to pre-pandemic levels
  • Reduced frequency of follow-up visits observed during the pandemic

Abstract

During the first and second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic frequency of follow-up visits after MBS was reduced in Germany. For those who participated, the quality of life was slightly reduced while all other outcomes were comparable. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic - and lockdown measures in general - on short-term MBS outcomes.
