Towards Optimization of Stay Space Layouts in Business District Pedestrian Zones

TSTaichi SugiyamaThe University of TokyoYTYu TagayaThe University of TokyoMYMiyu YonekuraThe University of Tokyo

Key Points

  • To investigate the optimal allocation of pedestrian space for movement and staying functions in urban settings.
  • Conducted a social experiment in a business district of Osaka.
  • Compared the effects of straight vs. zigzag arrangements of stay spaces on pedestrian behavior.
  • Analyzed human flow using camera systems and gathered feedback through surveys.
  • Zigzag layout led to more meandering walking paths and slower walking speeds.
  • Enhanced the staying function of pedestrian spaces as indicated by behavioral changes.
  • Survey results showed over half of participants preferred the aesthetic and comfort of the layout.
