Abstract

Youth identity formation in urban Tunisia is influenced by socio-political contexts, with varying levels of political engagement across different demographic groups. A participatory action research approach was employed, involving focus group discussions and surveys with urban youth from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The analysis reveals a significant correlation between positive self-identification as Tunisian citizens and increased political engagement, particularly among young women in lower socioeconomic brackets. Youth identity plays a crucial role in shaping their perceptions of civic duty and participation. Interventions focusing on inclusive youth development programmes can foster greater political engagement. Urban policymakers should prioritise initiatives that promote a sense of belonging to the national community among marginalized youth groups.
