Experimental design shows improved self-esteem and concentration in adolescent girls, indicating yoga's potential benefits.
The purpose of this research to study the effect of a 12 weeks of Integrated Yoga Program on Self Esteem and Concentration of Adolescent Girls. Experimental Pre-test Post-test Non-Equivalent research design was used. Two societies from Wakad, Pune City were selected by convenience sampling technique. After receiving information about the Research,26 parents showed interest in the program. As a part of Pre-test, Self Esteem was measured by filling up Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale(RSES) and Concertation was measured by using Digit Letter Substitution Test. Sample was divided into two groups, Experimental(n=13) and Control(n=13) by self-selection method.12 weeks of Integrated Yoga Program was designed and implemented on the Experimental group. Control group was asked to perform their usual activities. After 12 weeks, Self Esteem was measured by RSES and Concentration was measured by using DLST for all the 26 adolescent girls (both experimental and control group) as a part of Post-test. The total number of sample at the time of statistical Analysis was 24 (Experimental group=11 and Control group=13), as 2 participants were removed due to inconsistency. Collected pre-test and post-test data were statistically analyzed through Descriptive and Inferential statistics using SPSS software. Mean of RSES, DLST scores pre and post intervention for experimental group was 14.18(±4.21), 30.18(±2.85) and 16.81(±3.84), 46.18(±2.0) respectively. Similarly Mean of RSES, DLST scores pre intervention and post intervention for control group was 14.00(±4.20), 29.30(±1.25) and 32.15(±4.20), 29.30(±4.59) respectively. Mean of change in performance in RSES, DLST scores of experimental and control groups were 2.63, 16.00 and -0.46, 2.82 respectively. Calculated mean difference of change in performance of Self Esteem and concentration was 3.09,13.10 respectively for 24 participants. Calculated t-value was 4.83, 6.93 for 24 participants at 0.05 level of significance (p=0.001, p=0.001). Based on the statistical analysis, it can be concluded that regular practice of yoga has positive influence on Self- esteem and Concentration in adolescent girls.
