Abstract The universalization of health care remains a significant challenge in India, despite over seven decades of policy intervention to expand access to care. This article explores the multifaceted barriers to universal health care in India, including issues related to accessibility, affordability, and adequacy, and analyzes the potential solutions within the framework of global guidelines and the Indian government’s policies. The emphasis is on the importance of public–private collaboration, digitalization, and the integration of various systems of medicine to create a robust and inclusive healthcare system.
