Analysis reveals risk factors for femicide linked to domestic violence, indicating inadequate responses in post-conflict Serbia.
This analysis examines cases of femicide committed with firearms in Serbia between June 2017 and June 2020. In addition to identifying risk factors and circumstances preceding femicide, the analysis takes into account the specific post-conflict context of the region, including the widespread illegal possession of weapons as a legacy of the armed conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, as well as the increased risk of violence against women in households where veterans reside. Particular attention is given to the adequacy of the institutional response and the implementation of the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence (2017), which introduced mandatory risk assessment and recognized firearm possession as a risk factor. The analysis was carried out within the framework of the UNDP Serbia project "Reduce Risk, Increase Safety," with the support of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
