Integrative protocol shows improved quality of life and pain reduction in chronic venous ulcer patients, suggesting potential benefits.
A 65-year-old female patient with a chronic venous leg ulcer, the most severe form of chronic venous insufficiency, underwent a 39-day inpatient program combining acupuncture and naturopathy interventions.Chronic venous leg ulcers account for 60-80% of all leg ulcers and significantly impair physical and mental well-being.Treatment resulted in marked pain reduction, with the visual analogue scale score decreasing from 83 to 45, and improvements in quality of life (QOL), as reflected by Venous Insufficiency Epidemiological and Economic Study on quality of life (VEINES-QOL) scores increasing from 31 to 56 and VEINES-symptom (VEINES-Sym) scores from 18 to 36.The SF-36v2 survey also indicated substantial gains in physical and emotional health, pain reduction, and social functioning. These findings suggest that integrative acupuncture and naturopathy can significantly alleviate pain, swelling, and ulcer-related Sym while enhancing QOL in chronic venous leg ulcer management. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these benefits.
