Abstract: The growing awareness of the adverse effects of synthetic sunscreens on both human health and the environment has spurred the development of natural alternatives. Herbal sunscreens, derived from plant-based ingredients, offer a promising solution with their multifunctional benefits, including photoprotection and antioxidant properties. This review highlights the efficacy of herbal formulations in safeguarding the skin from Ultraviolet (UV) radiation while simultaneously combating oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Natural ingredients, such as green tea extract and aloe vera, possess active phytochemicals like polyphenols, flavonoids, and carotenoids, which contribute to their dual-action benefits. Herbal sunscreens not only minimize the risk of adverse skin reactions but also offer added therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. By leveraging the synergistic effects of these bioactive compounds, herbal formulations can effectively prevent UV-induced damage, reduce hyperpigmentation, and support skin health. Additionally, the use of biodegradable and sustainable ingredients aligns with eco-friendly practices, reducing the environmental impact often associated with chemical sunscreens. This review emphasizes the importance of standardized methods for assessing the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and antioxidant efficacy of herbal sunscreens, thereby ensuring consistency and reliability in their application. Furthermore, it examines the challenges and opportunities of incorporating natural sunscreens into mainstream skincare. By emphasizing the antioxidant-rich potential of herbal sunscreens, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of their role as a natural and sustainable approach to sun protection.
