Survey reveals 45% of Senegalese use traditional medicine, implying integration into healthcare could improve services.
Traditional medicine plays a significant role in healthcare systems across Africa, including Senegal. However, its integration into contemporary healthcare frameworks is under-researched. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative survey data with qualitative interviews. Data were collected from a stratified sample of Senegalese adults. Survey results indicate that approximately 45% of respondents used traditional medicine alongside or instead of modern healthcare services. Traditional medicine is widely accepted and utilised in Senegal, suggesting its importance in the country's healthcare landscape. Healthcare authorities should consider integrating traditional medicine into official health policies to better serve the population.
