Qualitative insights reveal limited collaboration among large firms and small enterprises, suggesting industry-specific initiatives may enhance partnerships.
The landscape of South African business sectors is characterized by a dichotomy between large firms (giants) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with limited synergies in their interactions. The research employs a qualitative approach, utilising semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders from both sectors to gather in-depth insights into their collaborative dynamics. Interview data revealed that while there is significant interest in forming partnerships, actual business linkages are predominantly driven by sector-specific needs and market demands rather than strategic alignment. The study concludes that fostering more robust business collaborations requires a nuanced understanding of sectoral priorities and mutual benefits for all parties involved. Recommendations include the development of targeted industry-focused initiatives to bridge knowledge gaps and encourage cross-sector collaboration.
