Qualitative analysis reveals accessibility of public radio supports civic engagement in Nigerian youth, indicating areas for improved political information dissemination.
Public radio stations in Nigeria have grown in number and reach over recent years, but their impact on urban youth political awareness remains underexplored. Qualitative data were collected through structured interviews with a sample of 50 young people in selected cities, focusing on their media consumption patterns and perceptions of political information. A notable finding was that while the majority (78%) had access to public radio, only 32% felt well-informed about local politics, highlighting a gap between accessibility and knowledge acquisition. Public radio stations play a significant role in providing accessible political information but struggle to bridge the gap between coverage and audience understanding. To enhance civic engagement, public radio should prioritise content that is more directly relevant to urban youth issues, such as education and employment opportunities.
