Mixed-methods approach reveals digital media enhances civic engagement and empowerment among youth in Lagos.
Digital media have become integral to contemporary youth activism in Lagos, Nigeria, offering platforms for organising events, disseminating information, and mobilizing support. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including surveys of 300 young activists and qualitative interviews with 15 key informants. Data were analysed using content analysis and thematic mapping techniques. Digital media engagement significantly increased youth activism participation by 42% in the last year, particularly evident in online organising efforts. The study reveals a positive correlation between digital media use and youth empowerment in Lagos, highlighting the need for supportive policies to enhance civic engagement. Policymakers should develop strategies that promote safe and accessible digital spaces for youth activism, ensuring equitable access to technology and information.
