Maternal mortality remains a significant public health challenge in many African countries, including Rwanda where various interventions have been implemented to reduce it. A longitudinal analysis was conducted using data from two CHW intervention projects implemented between and . The study employed qualitative interviews with community members and quantitative data collected through health facility records and surveys. CHWs significantly increased maternal healthcare utilization, particularly in rural areas where access to facilities was limited, leading to a reduction of maternal mortality by 30% over the five-year period. Community health worker programmes have been effective in reducing maternal mortality in Kigali, Rwanda. The findings suggest that tailored CHW models can be more impactful than generic approaches. Further research should focus on scalability and sustainability of these interventions in different socio-economic contexts within Rwanda.
