This perspective commentary reflects on recent frustrations with the institutionalization of ‘Responsible Research and Innovation’ (RRI) in Europe and vibrant debates about the same notion in China. It argues that Chinese debates about RRI are not only of national relevance but provide an entry point for intercultural dialogues about ‘humanizing science’ that highlight both convergences and tensions between science systems. Reclaiming RRI as a generative concept means embracing its potential as a boundary concept for addressing shared concerns and solidarity in science while recognizing tensions created by competing visions of the interface of science and society.
