Probiotics and Postbiotics for Skin Care Cosmetics
Abstract
Background The skin microbiome plays a central role in maintaining barrier integrity, immune regulation, and overall skin health. Disruption of this complex microbial ecosystem is increasingly associated with dermatological disorders such as acne, atopic dermatitis, and photoaging. In recent years, probiotics and postbiotics have emerged as promising cosmetic and dermatological interventions for restoring microbial balance and enhancing skin function. Probiotics, when administered orally or topically, demonstrate benefits including reduced acne lesions, improved hydration, wrinkle reduction, and modulation of systemic and local immune responses. Postbiotics, defined as nonviable microorganisms or their metabolites, offer additional advantages such as superior stability, safety, and regulatory feasibility. Methods In this narrative review, a targeted search was performed across multiple databases to identify relevant articles, from which the key relationships and strategies were extracted. Then, we represented the findings to provide a comprehensive overview of the topic and highlight emerging trends and gaps in the literature. Results Evidence from randomized controlled trials highlights their efficacy in improving skin hydration, elasticity, and dermal density while reducing transepidermal water loss and oxidative stress. Mechanistically, bioactive metabolites including short‐chain fatty acids, peptides, exopolysaccharides, and sphingomyelinase promote ceramide synthesis, antioxidant defense, and antimicrobial protection. Regulatory frameworks differ across regions, yet the global market increasingly favors microbiome‐friendly and postbiotic‐containing formulations. Future innovations are expected to move toward personalized and precision skincare through microbiome profiling, engineered microbial strains, and synbiotic formulations. Conclusion Collectively, probiotics and postbiotics represent a new frontier in cosmetic dermatology, combining efficacy with safety to advance next‐generation skincare solutions.
