Ethnographic exploration reveals beneficial partnerships between large firms and local SMEs, suggesting pathways for growth.
Large firms in South Africa often engage with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), seeking to leverage local resources for business growth and innovation. However, the nature of these linkages is not fully understood. The research employed qualitative methods including participant observation and semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders from both large firms and SMEs across various sectors in Johannesburg. A notable finding was the significant proportion (45%) of large firms reporting that their collaborations with local SMEs provided them with unique market insights, which they utilised to innovate their products or services. This study highlights the mutual benefits derived from strategic partnerships between large firms and local SMEs in South Africa. It underscores the importance of fostering such linkages for sustainable business growth. Policy makers should encourage more targeted programmes that support capacity building within SMEs to enhance their ability to engage with larger corporations effectively.
