Youth in urban Africa are emerging as a significant demographic with evolving identities and aspirations that intersect with political structures. The study employs semi-structured interviews and focus groups to gather qualitative data from young people aged 18-35 in major Nigerian cities, aiming to understand perceptions of self within the context of governance and societal expectations. Themes emerged around identity as a source of political engagement, with over 70% participants expressing that their sense of belonging to urban communities directly influenced their willingness to vote or participate in civic activities. Youth identity is pivotal in shaping their participation in public affairs. Understanding these dynamics can inform more inclusive and effective governance strategies. Policy makers should consider youth narratives when formulating initiatives that engage this demographic, recognising the importance of identity-based approaches to political inclusion.
