Policy analysis reveals the potential for eco-friendly packaging adoption among small manufacturers, suggesting incentives may enhance uptake.
Eco-friendly packaging solutions have gained traction globally as a means to mitigate environmental degradation caused by traditional plastic packaging. In South Africa's townships, where small manufacturers are particularly vulnerable and resource-limited, adopting eco-friendly alternatives could offer significant benefits. The research employed quantitative surveys and semi-structured interviews targeting a diverse sample of small manufacturers across selected townships. Data collection was conducted bi-monthly over the study's duration, ensuring comprehensive coverage of adoption trends. A notable proportion (35%) of surveyed small manufacturers expressed interest in adopting eco-friendly packaging solutions, primarily driven by cost savings and environmental concerns rather than regulatory pressures. The findings suggest that while there is growing awareness about the benefits of eco-friendly packaging, significant barriers such as initial costs and lack of local expertise hinder widespread adoption among small manufacturers. To facilitate wider adoption, policies should be developed to subsidize or incentivize the use of eco-friendly materials. Additionally, capacity building initiatives for small manufacturers in townships are recommended to address knowledge gaps.
