Abstract The global banking sector is undergoing a profound transformation driven by rapid digitalization, financial technology (FinTech) innovations, and changing consumer expectations. Neo banks and virtual banking institutions have emerged as significant disruptors, offering branchless, technology-driven, and customer-centric financial services. This paper examines the rise of neo banks and virtual banking in the digital economy with a special focus on India. Using secondary data and analytical methods, the study evaluates growth trends, technological foundations, impact on traditional banking, financial inclusion outcomes, and regulatory challenges. The findings indicate that neo banks enhance operational efficiency, customer convenience, and access to finance, particularly for millennial, small businesses, and underserved populations. However, issues related to cybersecurity, regulatory clarity, and sustainable profitability remain key challenges. The paper concludes with policy and strategic suggestions for strengthening neo banking ecosystems in the digital economy.
