Abstract

Abstract Introduction Hip Arthroscopy (HA) has become a popular procedure; however, there is significant geographic variation in its use worldwide. HA has its challenges, some of which can be attributed to a learning curve. This study aimed to evaluate the challenges that orthopaedic surgeons in African countries, the Middle East, and Turkey(MEAFT region) experience in their Hip Arthroscopy practice. The paper also sought to explore which training strategies these surgeons believe are most beneficial in achieving proficiency in HA. Methods An anonymous online survey was sent to all MEAFT members of the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA) who currently practice as Orthopaedic surgeons in the region. There were three components to this questionnaire: evaluating respondents’ demographics, the challenges surgeons face in performing HA, and evaluating interventions to improve HA training and performance in these countries. Results The availability of equipment for hip arthroscopy was the most significant challenge (44%). The most favoured suggested activities to improve HA use and training were a fellowship (72%), surgeon-to-surgeon visits (78%), and cadaver workshops (80%). Respondents were not in favour of telemedicine and virtual reality simulator training. Conclusion The demand for HA teaching and training is great. HA teaching and training are high in this region. Support in all forms is required, but cadaver courses and expert surgeon visits are most sought after. Modalities for improvement exist and remain promising in their potential to help surgeons refine their skills and shorten the learning curve.
