Retrospective analysis reveals effective pressure management for middle ear barotrauma in hyperbaric oxygen therapy, suggesting improved treatment outcomes.
This study analyzed the management of middle ear barotrauma (MEB), a common side effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), by comparing three different treatment regimens. Our retrospective analysis found that specific pressure regulation strategies can significantly shorten the time to relieve otalgia providing a scientific basis for optimizing treatment process of HBOT. However, as a common complication, MEB not only adversely affects the patient experience but may also interrupt the treatment course, highlighting the clinical significance of this study. This study concluded that Regimen 1 (compression for 20 min, maintenance at 0.06 MPa for 40 min, and postdecompression phase for 17 min) minimized the occurrence of MEB side effects.
