This article recounts the historical journey of discovering PAF's structure, highlighting its scientific significance.
This article describes the events pertaining to the elucidation of the chemical structure of the platelet-activating factor (PAF) molecule – details that are not included in the extant scientific literature on PAF – as well as the evolution of PAF research with a focus mainly in Greece. It recouznts the state of research on PAF at a time when its chemical structure was still unknown, as well as the global efforts undertaken in various research laboratories to elucidate its structure. Emphasis is placed on the work carried out at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where I was personally involved. Furthermore, it references the omissions, the historical context, and the events that occurred, all of which are mentioned in the correspondence that circulated within our community of pioneering PAF researchers during the quest to determine the molecule’s structure. The article highlights the significant impact that the elucidation of PAF’s chemical structure had on the advancement of research in the field – a field that continues to evolve and remains, to this day, an area of active scientific interest. Finally, I describe my insightful journey during which I was introduced to emerging scientific disciplines, connected with new scientists, and established enduring friendly and collaborative relationships, all of which significantly influenced my subsequent research efforts and professional path. Now, nearly 46 years after the discovery of PAF’s chemical structure, I feel that this journey – an incredible adventure that fate had in store for me – is a story worth sharing with researchers, especially to educate the younger generation. As the experiences of our predecessors constitute an essential historical foundation for those who follow.
