This work demonstrates effective integration of digital mental health interventions in therapy, improving routine care.
• DMHIs can serve four key clinical functions in therapy. • Practical steps to identify and assess DMHIs are discussed. • Guidance on integrating DMHIs into routine care is provided. The widespread use of the internet and technological devices such as smartphones represents an unprecedented opportunity for the integration of digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) into routine mental health care. Indeed, DMHIs have demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment of the most common mental health problems. Despite their potential, DMHIs’ impact remains limited due to insufficient training in mental health education programs and a lack of guidance for using DMHIs in everyday clinical practice. This work aims to bridge the translational gap between research and clinical practice by outlining different therapeutic functions of DMHIs in session, offering concrete and actionable steps for identifying and selecting suitable DMHIs for any given client, and providing clear guidelines for integrating DMHIs into therapy. By equipping clinicians with skills necessary to use DMHIs in their everyday work, the mental health field can leverage the strengths of both traditional mental health services and digital innovations, effectively improving routine clinical practice.
