This rejoinder engages with critiques on social rights origins, indicating further research avenues.
Careful and sustained engagement with one’s own work is always a great privilege. The author is grateful to Julia Dehm, Francisco Quintana, Graziella Romeo, Katharine Young, Albert Chen, Ulrike Davy, and Andrius Bielskis for their Afterwords. All of these scholars have raised thoughtful observations and challenges to the argument I have made in this year’s Foreword. One would certainly expect no less, as the sprawling sweep of my argument and its attempt to reframe the origins of social rights are undoubtedly amenable to clarification, emendation, amendment, and correction. In the space available, this rejoinder deepens the dialogues commenced by the Afterwords in order to highlight further lines of inquiry and possible research.
