Development of a telehealth platform improves visual performance in amblyopia, suggesting better treatment compliance.
This research presents the development of “Amplyopia”, an interactive web-based telehealth platform designed for the diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia (lazy eye). The system integrates visual acuity measurement with dichoptic therapy using gamified interactive exercises to improve patient engagement and treatment compliance. The platform utilizes computer vision techniques through MediaPipe Face Landmarks and the pinhole camera model to ensure accurate real-time distance monitoring during home-based visual testing. A full-stack architecture is implemented using Node.js and a Supabase SQL database to securely track patient progress over time. Unlike traditional amblyopia treatments such as eye patching, which suffer from low compliance rates, this system transforms therapy into an engaging digital experience. Experimental results from pediatric cohorts demonstrated significant improvement in visual performance, increasing from approximately 30% baseline to over 80% within 10 days. This work contributes to the field of tele-ophthalmology by providing an accessible, cost-effective, and scalable solution that combines diagnosis, therapy, and progress tracking within a single web-based environment.
