Older breast cancer survivors show reduced VO2peak linked to prior cardiotoxic therapy and future HF risk.
Why the study?
Cardiotoxic breast cancer therapy causes acute reductions in VO2peak, but whether impaired VO2peak is observed in older long-term breast cancer survivors remains unclear.
What are the mechanisms underlying reduced peak oxygen uptake in older long-term breast cancer survivors?
Observational (n=73)
What are the mechanisms underlying reduced peak oxygen uptake in older long-term breast cancer survivors?
Peak oxygen uptake may be an underappreciated risk factor in older long-term breast cancer survivors, although specific Fick determinants (diff) were similar to controls during plantar flexion exercise.
May warrant HF surveillance in older breast cancer survivors; extends evidence of late cardiotoxic effects.
BACKGROUND: peak is observed in older long-term breast cancer survivors (BCS) remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: peak and its Fick determinants in older (≥60 years) long-term female BCS previously treated with cardiotoxic therapy (n = 53; age: 69 ± 5 years; 15 ± 5 years post-therapy) and controls (CON; n = 20; age: 69 ± 5 years). METHODS: diff, assessed using phase contrast and magnetic resonance imaging oximetry at peak plantar flexion exercise. RESULTS: diff were also similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS: peak may be an underappreciated risk factor in older long-term BCS.

Foulkes et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Breast cancer survivorship (n=73). Prior cardiotoxic therapy for breast cancer vs. Controls was evaluated on Fick determinants (diff) assessed using phase contrast and magnetic resonance imaging oximetry at peak plantar flexion exercise. Fick determinants (diff) assessed at peak plantar flexion exercise were similar between older long-term breast cancer survivors previously treated with cardiotoxic therapy and controls.
