Analysis reveals how combined pressures lead to flawed military decisions, indicating risks for institutions.
This paper proposes that strategic decision failures follow a predictable structural pattern driven by finite integration capacity. When simultaneous pressures across geopolitical, economic, and domestic domains exceed this capacity, decision systems degrade without recognizing the loss of fidelity, producing coherent but incomplete models of reality. This condition — the integration trap — explains why capable institutions repeatedly make confident but flawed decisions under stress. Through analysis of the 1973 Arab–Israeli War, the 2003 Iraq invasion, and Russia’s 2022 Ukraine campaign, the paper shows how multi-domain pressure induces systematic model contraction. It further argues that this failure mode is exploitable by adversaries and outlines implications for detection, institutional design, and crisis stability.
