Abstract A method is described for assessing the back surface of hard contact lenses using an interference technique. The application of the method to the measurement of the peripheral zones of some lens designs is described with measurement data for two aspheric designs. Examples of qualitative assessment of lens surfaces are included. The instrument employed is a low‐power stereo‐microscope, such as is common in contact lens practice.
