Phenomenological hypotheses suggest squeezed light reveals microscopic noise fluctuations in atomic systems, indicating new measurement capabilities.
Yan et al. [6] recently demonstrated that squeezed light can propagate through a Rydberg EIT medium with sub-shot-noise performance (90.4% squeezing preservation at 88.9% transmittance), establishing a technical foundation for coupling non-classical light with atomic systems. Building upon this advance, we propose that squeezed light can be used not only to reduce noise for improved measurement precision, but also to analyze higher-order statistical features of noise, thereby probing potential microscopic statistical fluctuations of the fine-structure constant . We introduce three phenomenological hypotheses independent of ultraviolet (UV) theory (H1–H3): (H1) the instantaneous value of exhibits small random fluctuations characterized by an effective non-Gaussian parameter ; (H2) squeezed light amplifies this effect by a factor (where is the squeezing parameter); (H3) these fluctuations manifest as an additional variance in Rydberg transition frequencies. These hypotheses translate into a concrete experimental prediction: comparing the variance of transition frequencies measured with coherent light and with squeezed light, indicates the presence of additional fluctuations satisfying the statistical features of H1–H3. Based on current EIT-AT spectroscopy (single-shot precision 450 kHz, statistical uncertainty 0.3 MHz after repetitions), a signal on the order of 10 MHz can be resolved with a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 10 within 3 minutes. Prediction 1 constitutes a self-contained, testable proposition with a clear and unique falsification condition (). Should Prediction 1 be confirmed, further exploration of the correlation between frequency fluctuations and double-slit residual visibility (Prediction 2) and a non-zero plateau in the strong-measurement limit (Prediction 3) becomes possible. This proposal directly inherits the technical parameters of Yan et al., rendering the technical risk controllable. It aims to attract experimental collaborators with expertise in Rydberg atomic spectroscopy and squeezed light technology. Collaboration Invitation Dear Colleagues, This proposal, building upon the technically validated baseline established by Yan et al.
