Pre-trial detention in Uganda's criminal justice system is a significant concern, with many accused persons held in custody awaiting trial for prolonged periods. A mixed-methods approach incorporating qualitative interviews with stakeholders and quantitative analysis of court records to assess current detention patterns. The analysis reveals that over 70% of accused persons are detained for more than three months, highlighting a substantial issue requiring systemic reform. Current detention practices in Uganda's criminal justice system contribute significantly to delays and inefficiencies, necessitating targeted legal reforms. Implementing expedited pre-trial procedures, enhancing judicial efficiency, and promoting alternative forms of custody are recommended solutions.
