This analysis compares the effectiveness of protective filters in blocking harmful solar light, indicating enhanced safety features.
Samples of protective filters commonly used to observe the partially eclipsed sun were obtained and subjected to spectrophotometric analysis over the wavelength interval 330 to 2500 nm. Performance of these filters was compared with criteria for adequate ocular protection which have appeared in the literature. It appears that the greatest safety is provided by those devices incorporating a monatomic metallic coating as the filtering agent.
