Ethnographic study highlights cultural identity challenges among Mauritian youth, indicating a need for support interventions.
Psychological challenges within Mauritian cultural contexts have been understudied in comparison to other African countries. Mauritian society is a melting pot of Indian and African influences, creating unique psychological dynamics. The research employed participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions among a diverse sample of Mauritian youth and their parents. Data were analysed thematically to uncover patterns and themes. A significant proportion (45%) of participants reported difficulties in reconciling cultural identities, with language barriers being the most common issue (28%). Intergenerational tensions related to traditional practices also emerged as a recurring theme. The findings highlight the importance of culturally sensitive interventions and support systems for Mauritian youth, particularly those addressing language acquisition and intergenerational understanding. Schools should incorporate cultural literacy programmes, while community-based organizations could facilitate dialogue between generations to promote cohesion and mutual respect.
